MAINTAINING A LEGAL WORK FORCE

Florida Customs Brokers & Forwarders Association, Inc.
Friday, November 4th The Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce Presents:
MAINTAINING A LEGAL WORK FORCE
The past State Legislative session bills were filed on mandating E-Verify (electronic
employment eligibility verification) for all employers in the State of Florida with the
intent to curtail the hiring of illegal workers - it failed.   There are indications that
similar bills may resurface in the upcoming State session and there is legislation
pending in Congress to make it a requirement nationwide.  Arizona and other states
have passed legislation making it mandatory for employers and are currently mandatory
for state contractors in Florida.  E-Verify is currently a voluntary program - with the
exception of the states that have mandates for employers to use it.

E-Verify is not without controversy and there are employers who do not like it as it has
its limitations and shortcomings. Should E-Verify be mandated at the State or Federal
level, it will have greater implications for small businesses that do not have the IT
resources such as high speed internet, etc.

The Greater Miami Chamber has not endorse E-Verify but we are presenting this
program for employers to educate themselves, ask questions, etc as this has the
potential of becoming a reality in the future.
